Twisters Injured Nine

Three tornadoes and strong winds caused damage throughout the city and caused injuries to nine people.  According to the National Weather Service Office in Sioux Falls, three tornadoes all given the rating of an EF-2 tornado on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, dropped from a power thunderstorm as it moved across southeast, South Dakota.

The first tornado touched down at 11:28 pm CDT near the Ogorman School and traveled for a minute before going back up near South Western Avenue and 49th Street.  The twister damaged a shopping complex (picture above) and also an auto parts store.

The tornado had maximum winds of 125mph and had a width of 75 yards.  Unfortunately, one person was injured in this tornado.

The next tornado had an estimated peak winds of 130mph and touched down just east of Interstate 29 and just south of Interstate 229.  This tornado traveled just over a half-mile impacting the Avera Heart and Behavioral Hospitals.  Eight people were injured by this twister that a maximum width of 50 yards.

The last tornado reached the ground at around 11:24 pm CDT near 69th Street and Western Avenue.  Multiple single-family homes were damaged as the twister travel northeast for just under one mile.

The maximum winds in this tornado was 125mph and had a width of 50 yards.
