WEST-CENTRAL, SOUTH DAKOTA - Information from the Pennington County Sheriff's Office... Public safety remains our number one priority during this fire. Although less fire and smoke may be visible, there is still active fire and a lot of resources engaged to keep the area safe.
SD Highway 44 will remain closed through today (3/31/21) and overnight, including all side roads east and west of Highway 44. There is still active fire near Highway 44. Fire crews are working on or near that road and side roads and will be moving heavy equipment. We will reevaluate the Highway 44 closure Thursday morning.
Starting at 10 am, March 31, 2021, residents only may access their homes in the neighborhoods of Westberry Trails, Red Dale Drive, Pinedale Heights, National Guard Way and Cinnamon Ridge. Neighborhoods that remain closed include Magic Canyon, Dark Canyon, Blake Road, Cleghorn Canyon and Nameless Cave Road. Residents need to remain alert to their surroundings and understand the evacuations may be put back in place at a moment’s notice based on any unexpected fire activity.
Law Enforcement will remain posted and will only allow residents to enter these neighborhoods. We ask these homeowners to stay on their property and not wander the neighborhood or wooded areas. They should expect to see smoke, smoking stumps and small active fire. Please do not call 911 for smoke or fire flare-up unless you feel structures or residences are in imminent danger. The general public is asked to stay away from the fire areas during mop-up efforts. Heavy equipment will be accessing these areas and addressing flare-ups all day.
We are working with officials at Camp Mniluzahan for a potential opening later this week.
SD Highway 244 remains closed through Wednesday morning, March 31, 2021. The closure will be reevaluated in the early afternoon.
Conditions will not improve tomorrow as Fire Weather Watches are already in place for western and north regions of the state.
