A low pressure storm system will move into the region as soon as today. Strong northwest winds are forecast to develop over the area later today creating upslope across the northern Black Hills which in return will increase the snowfall rates. The heaviest snow is forecast to fall this afternoon with snowfall totals of 6 to 11 inches expected for elevations above 5,000 feet with lesser amounts of 3 to 6 inches across the lower elevations of the Black Hills.
Besides heavy snows, snow areas of blowing snow are likely by this afternoon and into the evening hours.
Winter Storm Warnings are in the effect for the northern Black Hills of Lawrence County until midnight today. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for central Black Hills of Pennington County until midnight for lesser amounts of snow.
